The Lord is Your Portion

“The Lord is the portion of my inheritance and of my cup: thou maintainest my lot…yea, I have a goodly heritage.” (Psalm 16:5-6, KJV).

At Psalm sixteen, verses five and six, David is exalting the Lord by identifying the Lord’s presence with him as “his portion and inheritance.” David adds to his exaltation of God by saying: “...the lines are fallen unto me in pleasant places..." and affirms that he has a goodly heritage.

In olden times, God had apportioned the land of Israel to His people by the casting of lots—to each family was given a portion, except the priests, and David is here recounting that fact and using it as a similarity or picture of God’s gift of His presence to him.

You and I, too, can do the same, for, spiritually speaking, each person coming into this life is apportioned a certain lot and inheritance of God: His image and likeness that we are (Genesis 1:26). And like David, every follower of Christ, our Master, has the authority to say: "The lines are fallen unto me in pleasant places. I have a goodly heritage in the presence of God...”

With the Lord as your portion, you and I have a measure of every quality of God within us, waiting to be brought forth by our awareness of God’s Spirit within us and our persistence in the Word.

And every time you and I confirm the truth to ourselves that “the Lord is our portion and our inheritance,” we build deeper into a consciousness of oneness with Him, His healing, restoration, discernment and divine guidance.

Can you confidently say, like David, that the Lord is your portion and inheritance? Would you consider that in Christ, you have a goodly heritage? Like David, do you accept that God’s measuring lines are fallen to you in good places? Can you tell those places in your life?

SUGGESTED READINGS: Psalm 16:5-6; Psalm 23:1; Ecclesiastes 5;18-20.

PRAYER: “The Lord is my portion and my inheritance: the lines are fallen unto me in pleasant places; yea, I have a goodly heritage. Thank you Father, Amen.”

With the Lord as our portion and inheritance, we have all we

need spiritually for our entire life-journey.
